Propionic Acid

Propionic acid is an organic compound used in the feed and food industries. It is added as a preservative and an anti-mould agent. This acid is also used as a food additive (known as E280).

It is a natural product of microbial fermentation. Propionic acid hinders the growth of mould and is used as a preservative

in feeds. It protects feeds against moulding, reduces the number of microorganisms and protects feeds from heat, caking and loss of nutrients.

It promotes the growth and health of farm animals. It stimulates the absorption of nutrients from the digestive tract and increases feed consumption, which helps improve daily weight gain in the animals.  It also prevents catarrhal conditions

of the digestive tract and has a moderate prebiotic effect. Propionic acid is added to feeds at a ratio of 0.2%–1% by weight.
