Carvacrol
Carvacrol is an organic chemical compound widely used in the feed and food industries. It is used as a disinfectant, a fungicide and a fragrance ingredient in cosmetics.
It is added to animal feeds, as it has antibacterial, antiviral,
anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It also stimulates vasomotor centres (VMCs). Carvacrol has antiparasitic properties, keeping nematodes away. It is also an analgesic
and a disinfectant and destroys pus-inducing (pyogenic) bacteria.
Carvacrol is safe for consumption. It can be found in thyme,
wild marjoram and caraway. It was approved as a food ingredient by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority. It is used as a preservative
and an agent against pathogenic bacteria that spoil food. Carvacrol also has anti-browning properties in the case
of meat. It has a beneficial effect on the nutritional
and sensory properties of foodstuffs.
